Out of the box thinking

Watercare Bulk Supply Monitoring

  • 320 custom EcoStar* cabinets deployed across Watercare’s Auckland network
  • Cabinets designed to support bulk flow monitoring and water quality management systems.

Introduction

Watercare is New Zealand’s largest water utility company, providing drinking water and wastewater services to 1.7 million people in the Auckland region. It also supplies bulk water services to Veolia Water, which manages local distribution and retail services.

Cable Ways Limited (CWL) designs and manufactures Watercare’s Ecostar outdoor cabinets, enabling continuous quality monitoring of drinking water and bulk flow management.

The Challenge:

In 1999, Watercare required 320 outdoor cabinets for a technology upgrade to support its extensive water and wastewater infrastructure. Their network includes, dams, pipelines, tanks, tunnels, and treatment plants. The cabinets needed to meet strict telecommunication, mechanical, and electrical safety requirements, including:

  • RF transparency for seamless communication
  • Antenna compatibility with vendor-approved equipment and integrated into the cabinet roof for reliable connectivity and vandal-resistance
  • Segmented access to wet and dry areas in a multi-compartment design with dedicated sections for communication, monitoring, and water quality testing.
  • Energy efficient thermal management

Watercare approached Cable Ways to design and manufacture a comprehensive solution that met these unique specifications and standards.

The solution

Cable Ways developed a custom cabinet solution to accommodate Watercare’s operational needs. The initial two-bay cabinet design featured:

  • A water flow compartment for metering and monitoring
  • An electronics compartment for housing control and communication equipment

Over time, Cable Ways expanded its product range to include various cabinet sizes, ensuring flexibility for multiple different applications. Some variations include:

  • Securely housing batteries, discreet and rack-mounted electronic components.
  • Multi port valve and pump designs, to meet specific operational needs

All within the approved standardised and predictable, cost effective manufacturing process.

The Outcome

Cable Ways continues to support Watercare with high-quality, purpose-built cabinets, ensuring Auckland’s water infrastructure remains efficient, and future-ready.
